One reason America has no single-payer health insurance system for all citizens is that private health insurers like United Health (UNH) are lucrative investments.

For example, Mr. Market paid $493.86 for UnitedHealth Group (UNH) on 25 April 2024. That share price rose from $491.92 on 25 April 2023. Furthermore, UnitedHealth’s share price hit a high of $552.97 on 30 November 2023.

UnitedHealth reported $99.80 billion in quarterly revenue in March 2024. The quarterly revenues rose by 8.56% from $91.93 billion in March 2023. However, UnitedHealth reported a -$1.41 billion quarterly net loss in March 2024. The net income fell by -125.11% from $5.61 billion in March 2023.

Conversely, UnitedHealth reported $6.91 in quarterly earnings per share (EPS). Plus, Google reports the EPS grew by 10.38% in the past year. In contrast, the quarterly net profit margin fell by -123.11.% in the same period to -1.41 in March 2024.

Is UnitedHealth’s business sustainable?

Skeptics will wonder if UnitedHealth’s business is sustainable because it generates less cash. For example, UnitedHealth’s quarterly cash from operations fell -92.99% in a year to $1.14 billion in March 2024.

Similarly, the quarterly free cash flow fell -126.52% to -$5.32 billion in March 2024. Meanwhile, the quarterly net change in cash fell by 83.90% from $18.55 billion in March 2023 to -$2.99 billion in March 2024.
